Garuda Indonesia is increasing the connectivity to Balikpapan, a major city on the island of Borneo, with three new routes this year.

Indonesia's flag carrier launched a daily Surabaya-Balikpapan service on 16 April, and operates a Boeing 737-800 on the route, says a spokesman.

The airline plans to start Yogyakarta-Balikpapan and Makassar-Balikpapan services this year, but neither a launch date nor frequencies have been firmed up, he adds.

Garuda will compete with Batavia Air, Lion Air and Sriwijaya Air on the Surabaya-Balikpapan route, Batavia Air and Lion Air on the Yogyakarta-Balikpapan route and Batavia Air, Lion Air and Merpati on the Makassar-Balikpapan route, according to schedules in Innovata.
