Garuda Indonesia launched four new domestic services and is raising frequencies on a number of other routes in August.
It began daily Balikpapan-Berau, Balikpapan-Banjarmasin and Balikpapan-Manado services on 1 August, using Bombardier CRJ1000 aircraft. This was followed by a daily Jakarta-Tanjung Pinang service on 3 August, using Boeing 737-500 aircraft.
The carrier says the launch of new routes from Balikpapan are part of its plans to establish the city as its fifth hub, after Jakarta, Denpasar, Makassar and Medan.
On 18 August, Garuda will double the Jakarta-Palangkaraya service to twice daily and raise the Jakarta-Mataram service from twice to thrice daily.
It also added a daily service on the Jakarta-Pontianak and Jakarta-Denpasar routes, raising their frequencies to eight and 14 times daily respectively, from 1 August.
Innovata schedules show that Garuda competes with Lion Air on the Balikpapan-Manado route. It also competes with Wings Air and Sriwijaya Air on routes from Balikpapan to Berau and Banjarmasin.
