Monarch Group executive chairman Iain Rawlinson is to take interim charge of the UK travel group's airline business while a long-term successor is found for Kevin George who is stepping down as Monarch Airlines managing director.

George, who has been with the company since 2007, has headed the airline since the start of 2011. He will leave in November to take up a senior position outside of the airline industry. Rawlinson will take charge of the carrier while a successor is found.

Under George's leadership the airline has embarked on a restructuring of the airline, cutting its cost base while also lifting traffic volumes almost a fifth.

"We would hope to announce [a successor] within the next few months," says Rawlinson.

Other changes in the group see Hugh Morgan become chairman of the group's tour operations arm. Phill Boggon will succeed Morgan as managing director of Monarch travel group.
