Hawaiian Airlines posted a 22.8% increase in passenger traffic during December compared with the year earlier.

Capacity for the month rose 27.3% while the passenger load factor decreased 2.9 percentage points to 79.9%.

The increase is driven by the addition of four Airbus A330-200s and at least one Boeing 717-200 to Honolulu-based Hawaiian's fleet during 2012, according to Flightglobal's Ascend Online database.

The carrier's passenger numbers rose 9.7% year-on-year to 812,395.

On a year-to-date basis, passenger traffic and capacity increased 20.4% and 22%, respectively. The airline's load factor declined 1.1 percentage point to 83.2% compared with the corresponding period in 2011.

Passenger numbers grew 9.4% to 9.48 million in 2012.
