Helvetic Airways has selected the Airbus A319 model to expand its operations beyond the range of its Fokker 100 fleet in spring 2013.

The Swiss charter carrier currently operates six Fokker 100s but will start flying to a number of Mediterranean destinations under a contract with tour operator Kuoni, deploying one A319 configured to carry 130-140 passengers.

Destinations will include Heraklion, Kos and Rhodes in Greece as well as Fuerteventura/Arrecife and Las Palmas/Tenerife in Spain. The carrier will also operate flights to Larnaca in Cyprus and Hurghada/Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt under its 2013 summer schedule.

Helvetic says it will recruit 25 new airline employees over the course of the fleet expansion, raising its staff levels to more than 225.
