Hong Kong International Airport's (HKIA) total passenger numbers increased by 1.1% to 4.9 million in April, compared with the same period last year.

The airport says tourism was the main driver behind the growth in passenger traffic, with a 7% increase from the same month in 2012. Routes to and from mainland China and Southeast Asia performed particularly well during the month.

Total aircraft movements at the airport rose by 5.1% to 30,500, while cargo volumes went up by 4.5% to 342,000t.

Higher cargo throughput in April was primarily the result of a 5% year-on-year growth in exports. During the month, cargo throughput to and from Southeast Asia and Taiwan outperformed other key regions.
