Hong Kong International Airport's (HKIA) total passenger numbers increased by 8% to 5 million in March, compared with the same period last year.

The airport says the growth in passenger numbers was mainly driven by Hong Kong resident traffic, which registered an increase of 18% over the same month a year ago. Passenger numbers to and from Southeast Asia and Mainland China outperformed other key regions.

Total aircraft movements at the airport rose by 3.2% to 30,500, while cargo volumes decreased by 2.2% to 360,000t.

The decline in cargo throughput in March was mainly attributed to the 7% year-on-year drop in exports. Imports recorded a slight decline, while trans-shipments registered a 7% increase compared with the same month a year ago.

Passenger aircraft movements grew by 5.4%, while cargo aircraft movements went down by 6.9%.
