Icelandic low-cost carrier Wow Air is to launch its first flights to North America next year, beginning services from Reykjavik to Boston in May.
Wow will operate Airbus A320 flights from Iceland to the US east coast city six times a week. The airline, which acquired the flight-operations assets of Iceland Express last year, already serves 14 cities in Europe.
"Boston is a well-known starting hub from North America to Iceland and Europe. I believe there is an opportunity there to increase traffic into Iceland," said Wow founder and chief executive Skuli Mogensen during the World Travel Market in London.
"We have 14 destinations in Europe and we are starting the first one in the USA. We will continue to add destinations in Europe – we start Stockholm next year - but North America is the obvious next step. We are looking at other opportunities in North America.
"It’s the right range for our aircraft," adds Mogensen on the decision to launch in Boston. However, the carrier is looking at future destinations across North America and will not be restricted to the east coast which it can serve today with Airbus narrowbodies. Mogensen says the carrier is looking at bringing in other aircraft types to serve such routes, but would not be drawn on which aircraft are under consideration.
