Low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines has become the first carrier to lease Airbus A320neo aircraft through an agreement with International Lease Finance (ILFC) for five units.
ILFC, which was the first leasing company to have ordered the Airbus A320neo family, has the largest order position among aircraft leasing companies to date. It holds a commitment for 100 A320/321neos and purchase rights for 50 additional units.
"Spirit is the industry's first airline to commit to an operating lease for the A320neo. ILFC recognised the value and demand for this new aircraft, and gained valuable delivery positions, from which Spirit will benefit," says Henri Courpron, chief executive officer of ILFC.
Spirit has orders for 45 A320neos, part of a 75-aircraft order it firmed up in November 2011. The 30 remaining aircraft in the order are the current generation A320s.
