India's civil aviation ministry is pushing for tier two and tier three companies in the country to manufacture aircraft components and be involved in assembly work to compete in the global aerospace industry.

Describing India's aerospace industry as being in the "infancy stage", civil aviation minister Ajit Singh says most aircraft manufacturing is currently being done by the public sector, although those in the private sector are starting to show interest.

The country also has some firms that are manufacturing aircraft parts outsourced by foreign firms - and these firms have the potential to supply their products to foreign companies, he adds.

Singh stresses the need for a comprehensive civil aviation policy pertaining to issues related to regulatory standards and infrastructure that can affect the aerospace industry.
