Lufthansa Systems has unveiled its new e-reader functionality for its BoardConnect wireless IFE system at the show.
The e-reader allows passengers to read electronic magazines and adds to the existing content BoardConnect offers such as on demand video /audio content and interactive moving maps. Lufthansa Systems has also added a maintenance front-end to make it easier for airlines to maintain the system, while it will add a shopping feature later this year enabling passengers to make in-flight purchases via their own devices.
BoardConnect is already flying on trial flights with with Lufthansa, Condor and Virgin Australia and the company has signed a contract with the latter, though no details have been released.
The product is pitched at as a narrowbody aircraft solution, though Lufthansa Systems senior vice president, BoardConnect, Norbert Muller stresses this is to do with the market rather capability - the system is in fact flying on a Boeing 767 for example.
"We see big demand for it and we are in negotiations with a number of airlines from around the world," explains Muller, noting that its wireless solution provides a way to bring personalised IFE into the narrowbody market.
