On 3 February, an Iranian Safir 2 Block 2 rocket launched a small satellite called “Navid-e Elm-o Sanat” (which translates as “Promise of Science and Industry”) from the Semnan launch site in Iran. The 50kg Navid satellite, which was built by was built by the Sharif University of Technology, is described by Iran’s IRNA news agency as for weather and disaster monitoring. The Navid satellite has an expected life of two months and is expected to re-enter Earth’s atmosphere during April. The on-board imaging system carries a standard 8-24 mm lens from a Sony digital camera which would give the imagery a best resolution of around 400 metres.
