Iranian airframer HESA has signed an agreement with Antonov on deliveries of Ukrainian-built An-148 and An-158 passenger jets, with production of parts within Iran.

The acquisition plan is divided into several stages and ultimately calls for procurement of 60 Antonov regional jets.

Two Ukrainian-built An-158s, due for completion next year, and two An-148s will be leased under an initial step. These will allow the Iranian firm to master operations of the new type and prepare flight and ground crews.

The second step calls for purchase of 18 An-158s, and then the localisation of An-158 production in Iran at the HESA plant in Isfahan, said a source close to the matter.
