Jet Airways chief executive Gary Toomey has resigned with immediate effect, seven months after taking the post with the Indian carrier.

The carrier confirms Toomey's resignation in a brief stock market statement, adding that chief financial officer Ravishankar Gopalakrishnan will serve as acting chief executive until the board identifies and appoints a new chief executive.

Toomey, a former Air New Zealand chief, only took the helm of Jet in June after the departure of Nikos Kardassis.

He has headed the airline during the period in which Etihad's investment and co-operation with the Indian carrier was being finalised. The Gulf carrier completed its acquisition of a 24% stake in Jet last November.
