Following a 17 September announcement of new flights from Tampa to San Juan, JetBlue Airways announced today flights from Jacksonville, Florida to the Puerto Rican city beginning 19 May.

Schedules in the Innovata database show that currently no carrier offers direct flights from Jacksonville to San Juan. JetBlue says the two cities in October 2009 signed an agreement to become "sister cities", and the new route is one initiative to bring the two destinations closer together.

JetBlue is expanding in Puerto Rico as American Airlines plans to scale back its offerings to Puerto Rico in April of 2011. Mainline service is being discontinued to Boston, Philadelphia, Tampa, Baltimore, Washington Dulles and Santo Domingo.

American Eagle plans to cut flights from San Juan to Anguilla, La Romana and Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; Port of Spain, Trinidad; and Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
