Qantas Airways' low-cost subsidiary Jetstar is seeking compensation from Sydney Airport after a security breach yesterday led to an evacuation of a terminal and flight cancellations.

"We are having discussions with the airport and discussing possible opportunities for compensation," says a Jetstar spokeswoman. The airline cancelled 15 flights yesterday, affecting more than 2,000 passengers.

Sydney Airport evacuated passengers from its domestic Terminal Two yesterday afternoon after a security screening device lost power, leading to some passengers passing through without being screened. All passengers were re-screened, resulting in flight disruptions.

The airport has said it is investigating the cause behind the power loss.

Jetstar, calling the incident "regrettable", says: "We are liaising with Sydney Airport to ensure that the security screening issue is fully investigated and remedial actions put in place to ensure this does not happen again."

The airline operated six ad-hoc services this morning to and from Sydney to cater to stranded passengers, says Jetstar's spokeswoman.
