Kulula, the low-cost brand of South Africa's Comair, will launch twice daily flights from Johannesburg's OR Tambo International airport to East London on 1 March 2013.

The route was one of several domestic services grounded by the failure of 1time Airline, which filed for liquidation on 2 November 2012.

Kulula says it also plans to expand its domestic offering by boosting frequencies on two other ex-1time services - Johannesburg-George and Johannesburg-Durban.

The announcement comes after rival Mango, a subsidiary of flag carrier South African Airways, said it will launch flights on the former 1time routes of Cape Town-Port Elizabeth and Johannesburg-Port Elizabeth.
