LATAM Airlines has mandated operating lessor SMBC Aviation Capital for four new Airbus A320-family jets under a sale and leaseback transaction.

The aircraft comprise two A320s and two A321, confirms the lessor.

Deliveries are variously scheduled for this month, February, June and July. The aircraft will be operated by LAN Airlines.

LATAM has said it plans to mandate a request for proposals for financing on eight new A321s.

Speaking at the Airline Economics finance forum in Dublin on 20 January, LATAM's chief executive Andres del Valle said bids on the financing request, which was issued on 30 December for export credit support and commercial loans, are due "next week".

The South American carrier is seeking export credit agency-guaranteed proposals, says a banking source.

The first A321 covered by the proposal will be delivered in May.
