LATAM chose to join Oneworld only after analysing “many options”, and made its decision based on the airline alliance’s strength in North American and European markets, says the South American carrier’s commercial director for the UK and northern Europe.
“We are confident joining Oneworld was the best option that we analysed,” said Martin Modarelli at a briefing in London on 30 April. “Especially because Oneworld gave us a good connection to North America and to Europe and within Europe. Oneworld has very good connections to Miami, to New York, and it has Madrid and Heathrow, which are very good hubs.”
The South American carrier joined the global airline alliance in March, though LAN was already a Oneworld member.
While there are no current plans for new codeshares or closer co-operation with Oneworld members at this stage, Modarelli says it is a “possibility we are always analysing”.
