Lufthansa Technik and Rolls-Royce have today formally opened the new facility for their joint venture N3 Engine Overhaul Services, which is located in Arnstadt, south of Erfurt in the German state of Thuringia.

N3 has been established to handle overhaul of Rolls-Royce Trent 500, 700 and 900 powerplants.

It received approval for Trent 500 servicing in April and expects Trent 700 approval next year. Trent 900 work will begin in 2009.

“Completion of construction in record time shows that choosing Arnstadt as the location for N3 was the right decision,” says Lufthansa Technik chairman Wilhelm Henningsen. “We have been able to develop another high-tech overhaul facility within our global network with, altogether, 27 companies.”

Since April the joint venture has taken delivery of more than 10 turbofans, and the first engines have already been serviced. The venture expects to overhaul 130 engines in its first two years, and eventually handle 200 per year.

N3 employs some 270 personnel and this figure will rise to 500 by 2010.
