German maintenance provider Lufthansa Technik is constructing a new facility for its materials technology department at its headquarters in Hamburg.
The MRO company is investing €20 million ($26 million) in the six-storey building, which will include a chemical laboratory for the central materials technology department.
The 14,000m² (150,000ft²) building will also house other activities with around 6,000m² of workshop space on the first two floors and offices on the floors above, says LHT.
The opening is planned for spring 2014.
With the new facility, the MRO provider aims to centralise all material technology activities in one location.
The department - comprising around 20 engineers and other staff members - is responsible for evaluating a range of technologies. These include component and systems assessments, production resource monitoring, and testing fluids such as hydraulic oil and cleaning detergents.
