NAV Portugal has selected Sensis Corporation to install a multistatic dependent surveillance (MDS) system at the Lisbon Airport, equipment that will provide air traffic controllers with precise aircraft position information on the airport and up to 5nm around the airport.

Sensis' MDS uses multiple ground-based non-rotating sensors to triangulate an aircraft's position based on transponder signals emitted from the aircraft. Additional information captured by MDS includes precise position and aircraft identification information in any weather conditions at update rates faster than radar.

Lisbon joins 90 other sites worldwide using Sensis' multilateration technology, according to the company.
