Los Angeles International airport posted a 2.9% year-on-year increase in passenger numbers to 63.7 million in 2012.

The airport attributes the traffic growth to new international service, improvements in the Asia-Pacific economy and a modest strengthening of the Southern California economy, says Gina Marie Lindsey, executive director of airport operator Los Angeles World Airports.

Domestic passenger volume grew 3.1% to 46.5 million, while international traffic grew 2.5% to 17.2 million.

Total aircraft movements increased 0.2% to 605,480, while cargo tonnage increased 5% to 1.96 million tonnes.
