Brazilian airframer Embraer's first-quarter commercial aircraft sales have fallen by 40%, following lower deliveries.

The manufacturer disclosed earlier this month that it delivered 21 commercial jets over the three-month period.

Commercial aviation sales reached $523 million compared with $870 million in the first quarter of 2009.

Overall sales were down by 14% to $990 million but it managed to cut its costs by 18%, and it trebled income before taxes to $66 million.

Embraer posted an overall net profit of $35 million for the period, in contrast with a loss of $23 million previously.
