Lufthansa and Avianca have signed a new codesharing agreement, subject to government approval.

Under the deal, Avianca will add its code to Lufthansa's five-weekly Airbus A340-600 flights from Frankfurt to Bogota.

In return, Lufthansa will add its code to Avianca's services from Bogota to the Colombian cities of Medellin, Cali, Barranquilla, Pereira, Cartagena and Bucaramanga.

The agreement is to be extended to include Avianca's flights to destinations across South America, as well as certain Lufthansa services from Madrid and Barcelona, subject to the granting of traffic rights.

Avianca-TACA is in the process of joining Lufthansa in the Star Alliance.
