France's Lyon Saint Exupéry Airport has reported a 5.7% year-on-year increase in passenger numbers for 2011 to 8.4 million.

Over the year, international passenger numbers rose 4.5% to 5.2 million, representing 61.1% of total traffic.

European traffic increased 11.3% to 3.8 million passengers.

Strongly affected by the Arab Spring, traffic to North Africa declined 8.6%. Tunisia showed a decrease of 32.5%, while Morocco stabilised with a rise of 0.9%. Algeria alone has continued to grow with an increase of 13.6%.

The number of aircraft movements for the year grew 1.6%.

For the month of December the airport saw a 2.6% decline in traffic compared with the same period in 2010, due to a strike by security staff.
