The Kremlin has named Maksim Sokolov as Russia's new transport minister.

Newly-elected president Vladimir Putin endorsed Sokolov's candidature alongside 27 other cabinet members on 21 May.

Sokolov succeeds Igor Levitin, who has headed the transport ministry since March 2004.

In the previous government, Sokolov directed the department for industry and infrastucture.

He was also in charge of investment, economic development and industrial policy at the St Petersburg city authority between 2004-09.
