Malaysia Airlines (MAS) has posted a 6.4% drop in total passenger traffic, as measured in RPKs, for 2012.
The carrier's overall capacity declined by 6.1% and total passenger load factor dropped by 0.3 percentage points to 74.7% for the full year. Its passenger numbers rose by 0.7% to 13.4 million during the period.
For December 2012, the carrier's total passenger traffic rose by 12%, while its domestic and international RPKs rose by 16% and by 12% respectively.
The carrier's total passenger numbers increased by 15% to 1.38 million, while its domestic passenger numbers climbed by 16% to 532,000 and international passenger numbers rose by 15% to 845,000.
The airline's overall capacity, as measured in ASKs, grew by 2.4%. Its domestic capacity grew by 11%, while international capacity increased by 1.4% in December.
The airline's overall passenger load factor grew by 7 percentage points to 81.4%. The domestic passenger load factor increased by 3.7 percentage points to 82.8% and the international passenger load factor rose by 7.4 percentage points to 81.2%.
On the cargo front, MAS' freight traffic in load tonne kilometres rose by 7.3%. MAS' cargo capacity as measured in capacity tonne kilometres rose by 10%. The airline's freight load factor fell by 1.9 percentage points to 69.2%.
