Malaysia Airlines has appointed Azmil Zahruddin as its new CEO, replacing Idris Jala who has joined Malaysia's cabinet as a minister.
Azmil, was the executive director and chief financial officer at Malaysia's flag carrier, joined the airline in 2005 from MAS' parent company Penerbangan Malaysia. Before that, he was with PricewaterhouseCoopers in London and Hong Kong.
"Over the past four years, Azmil and Idris have worked very closely together in steering the airline out of its financial crisis," says MAS chairman Munir Majid.
"We are pleased that Azmil has agreed to take up the leadership mantle. He has our full support and the support of our 19,000 strong employees. Together, we will continue to build on the strong foundation for change and achieve the impossible."
Azmil added that he hopes to build on the work Idris has done in reorganising the airline and helping it to return to profitability.
"The next few years will be challenging and we need to continue to build on the momentum that is already in place," he adds.
