Air Berlin's former chief executive Hartmut Mehdorn has stepped down as non-executive director on the carrier's board of directors.

The German airline says that Mehdorn resigned from the post with immediate effect on 12 March.

Mehdorn became Air Berlin's interim chief executive on 1 September 2011 and was replaced by Wolfgang Prock-Schauer on 7 January 2013.

Mehdorn's departure from Air Berlin's board - which he had been a member of since mid-2009 - follows his appointment as head of Berlin's airport operator on 8 March.
