Mitsubishi Aircraft president Hideo Egawa will assume the roles of chairman and chief executive with effect from 1 January 2013.

The chairman position has been left vacant since Nobuo Toda retired in June 2011.

Mitsubishi Aircraft's senior executive vice-president Teruaki Kawai will succeed Egawa as president, and also assume the role of chief operating officer on the same date.

Kawai's engineering background will come in useful as the development of the Mitsubishi Regional Jet gets "more intensive" as its first flight schedule draws nearer, says a spokeswoman.

The regional jet is scheduled to have its first flight in the fourth quarter of 2013 and entry into service in the third quarter of 2015.

Both the positions of chief executive and chief operating officer have been newly created.
