Mitsubishi Aircraft has been marketing its Mitsubishi Regional Jet in Taiwan.

The chairman of Taiwanese maintenance, repair and overhaul firm Evergreen Aviation Technologies (EGAT), David Wang, confirms there have been some exploratory discussions about EGAT supporting the MRJ in the region but he stresses these are just preliminary discussions and no decisions have been made.

Mitsubishi has a firm order for 15 MRJs from All Nippon Airways but so far has yet to secure any more orders.

The president of EGAT's sister company EVA Air, Jeng Kung-yeun, says the aircraft-maker has approached the airline about ordering MRJs.

Jeng says: "We are thinking about some suitable aircraft but we are still in the study and evaluation stage".

The aircraft EVA is studying are replacements for Boeing MD-90s that EVA's smaller sister carrier Uni Air operates domestically and on thin routes to secondary cities in Asia.

Japan is a political ally of Taiwan's and there are strong historical links between the two.

Some of the top Taiwanese executives at EGAT's and EVA Air's parent company, Evergreen Group, can speak Japanese.
