Swiss International Air Lines has appointed its senior commercial manager Bernd Bauer to succeed Karl Kistler as chief executive of its leisure subsidiary Edelweiss Air.

Bauer is vice-president of revenue management, pricing and distribution at Lufthansa-owned Swiss. He started his aviation career with Crossair, before that regional operator became the springboard for establishing Swiss in 2002, after the collapse of Swissair.

Kistler – who has been Edelweiss’s chief since 2002 – will step down in the third quarter, but continue working as a pilot for the airline.

Edelweiss became a wholly owned Swiss subsidiary in 2008.
