Qatar Airways brought a Oneworld livery-adorned Boeing 777 to Hamad International airport to crown today's alliance membership event, but there remains no firm date for when the new Doha gateway will open.
The new airport had been earmarked to open this year but was delayed by late completion and contractual issues with the developer.
During a press conference at the airport to mark the airline's accession to Oneworld, Qatar chief executive Akbar Al Baker - who is also chief executive of the new airport - referred to recent statements from the Qatar transport minister regarding the opening.
Local reports quote minister Jassim Seif Al Saluiti as saying the new airport will open early next year.
"The airport will open for 28 million passengers annually and we have already chosen the architects to do the stage up to 50 million," says Al Baker.
"We are ready to cater for the influx of Oneworld passengers. In just three years we will have the additional phase of the airport ready."
