The Brazilian Civil Aviation Authority (ANAC) has authorised the Greater Natal International airport to open at 08:30 local time on 31 May.

Located in São Gonçalo do Amarante, Argentina's Corporacion America operates the airport under a 28-year concession awarded in 2011.

Natal was the first airport privatisation in Brazil, before simmer deals were closed for Brasilia International, Sao Paulo Guarulhos International and Viracopos-Campinas International airports in 2012.

The new airport will replace the existing Infraero-operated Augusto Severo airport when it opens.

The Inframerica consortium, which also operates the Brasilia airport, is responsible for everything at the airport except the runway and tarmac, which are the responsibility of the Rio Grande do Norte state.
