Christopher Hart has been designated as vice chairman of the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) by President Barack Obama.

Hart became a member of the NTSB for the second time on 12 August, and his latest term will end on 31 December 2012. His vice chairmanship runs for two years.

Hart previously served as an NTSB member between 1990 and 1993.

After leaving the board, he served as deputy administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Most recently, Hart was FAA deputy director for Air Traffic Safety Oversight.

As NTSB vice chairman, he fills an empty post last held by Mark Rosenker, and he joins new NTSB chairman Deborah Hersman on the board.

Hart is a licensed pilot with commercial, multi-engine and instrument ratings.
