New Zealand-based start-up carrier Kiwijet is considering freighter operations in addition to passenger services.

Kiwijet says in a statement reiterating that it has selected the BAE Systems Avro RJ100 that it plans to operate four passenger aircraft “and perhaps two BAE 146-200 QT freighters for domestic cargo operations”.

Until now the airline has only said that it plans to operate passenger services on New Zealand domestic routes. Executives recently visited BAE Systems in the UK to inspect aircraft.

Kiwijet originally planned to operate Boeing 737-300s on domestic passenger services but later switched its focus to regional jet operations.

It hopes to launch services late next year. Cities it plans to serve initially include Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, Hamilton, Invercargill, Nelson and Palmerston North.
