The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has changed the name of Newark airport in commemoration of the victims of 11 September.

The New Jersey airport – a hub for Continental Airlines - will now be known as Newark Liberty International Airport. New York governor George Pataki and New Jersey governor James McGreevey requested the change.

“The new name is a way to properly recognize the heroes of 11 September,” says a Port Authority spokesman.

He says the Port Authority has not yet estimated the cost of switching airport signage and promotional materials.
