Nigerian carrier Arik Air is to launch services between Lagos and London Heathrow on 1 December after securing enough slots to begin the route.

Lagos-based Arik will serve London - its first intercontinental route - using an Airbus A340-500 slated for delivery form Airbus in mid-November.

The aircraft, which is the first of two A340-500s that Arik has on order, will be configured with 36 business and 201 economy class seats.

Arik Air managing director Michael McTighe says few people believed that Arik would reach this stage when it launched operations in October 2006. He adds: "Now we have proved that we can deliver on promises."
