Norwegian Air Shuttle has announced that SITA is to supply it with aircraft communication addressing and reporting system (ACARS) services for its new fleet of Boeing 737-800s.
Under the five-year contract, SITA's Aircom service will allow the Norwegian carrier to meet the European Union's Single European Sky requirements for all new aircraft supplied after 2011 to be equipped with controller pilot data link communications. Norwegian has ordered 58 737-800s, deliveries of which will continue until 2014.
The airline will use the system to provide a link between the cockpit and its operations and technical centres. It will initially allow the carrier to record aircraft movements and timings, react to unscheduled maintenance requirements and receive up-to-date weather and digital aautomatic terminal information services. From early next year, its use will be be extended to enable in-flight engine monitoring.
