Norwegian is setting up a base in Tenerife to expand its network between Spain and northern Europe.
The crew base at Tenerife South airport is the Scandinavian low-cost carrier’s fourth station in Spain, joining existing operations at Las Palmas, on the neighbouring Canary Island of Gran Canaria, and at Alicante and Malaga, on the mainland.
"We see a major passenger potential between Spain, Germany and UK," says chief executive Bjørn Kjos. However, the new base will also be used to increase capacity on routes from Spain to Scandinavia.
New routes will be opened from Berlin’s Schönefeld airport to Gran Canaria and Tenerife in February. Both will be operated twice-daily.
Meanwhile, the airline intends to add an extra weekly frequency to each of its current routes from Malaga and Tenerife to Cologne, Hamburg and Munich during the winter 2013/14 schedule.
From London Gatwick airport, Norwegian will temporarily increase frequency to Tenerife from four-times-weekly to daily between 31 January and 29 March.
Similarly, the Oslo-based carrier plans to boost its thrice-weekly Malaga-Gatwick operations to a daily service during March.
Additional flights will also be operated from Tenerife to Copenhagen, Gothenburg, Oslo and Stockholm, as well as from Malaga to Oslo.
