Norwegian is to open a Barcelona base next year.

From April, it will operate new routes to Berlin, Hamburg, Sandefjord Torp and Warsaw from the base, and more far-flung destinations may be added. "We are considering the airport for future long-haul operations," says Norwegian chief executive Bjørn Kjos.

The Oslo-based low-cost carrier already has Spanish bases in Alicante, Las Palmas, Madrid, Malaga and Tenerife.

Three Norwegian Boeing 737-800s are to be stationed at Barcelona's El Prat airport, and a total staff of 100 – split between pilots and cabin crew – is to be recruited locally for the base.

In addition to launching the four new routes, Norwegian is to increase frequencies from Barcelona to Helsinki, London and Stockholm.
