Scandinavian budget carrier Norwegian is to set up a long-haul base at London Gatwick, reinforcing its position at the UK capital from where it operates transatlantic services.
Norwegian ventured into long-haul services using Boeing 787s. The carrier has seven of the type, with another 10 on order.
It operates from Gatwick to Los Angeles, New York and Fort Lauderdale.
Norwegian already has a crew base at the UK airport, with 90 pilots and 200 cabin crew, for its short-haul operations. But it says it will start recruiting to establish a long-haul base next year.
"Our hiring in the UK has been well-received and many pilots are keen to be based at London Gatwick," says Norwegian flight operations director Torstein Hoas.
