The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has sent a team to Japan to help in the investigation of today's crash of a FedEx Boeing MD-11 freighter at Tokyo Narita International Airport.

The team being sent includes senior air safety investigator John Lovell as well as two other NTSB investigators and representatives from the US FAA, Boeing and the Air Line Pilots Association, the NTSB says in a statement.

The Japanese authorities will be providing updates on the progress of the investigation, it adds.

The FedEx MD-11F, registration N526FE and manufacturer's serial number 48600, burst into flames after its left wing clipped the runway on landing at around 07;00 today.

Narita airport fire crews have since extinguished the flames but the aircraft's charred wreckage is still blocking runway 34L.
