Fiji Airways' regional unit Pacific Sun has agreed to lease an ATR 72-600 turboprop from Singapore-based lessor Avation.

Subject to confirmation, the new aircraft is expected to be delivered in April 2014.

The ATR will be on an operating lease for 12 years, says Fiji Airways.

"What this acquisition will allow us to do is match demand with the right capacity. Due to its size, our new ATR will operate between Fiji's larger ports - Nadi, Suva and Labasa, and from Fiji to other Pacific island destinations, so naturally we will increase frequency of flights between to our regional ports," says Pacific Sun general manager Shaenaz Voss.

Flightglobal's Ascend Online database shows that Pacific Sun operates a fleet of two ATR 42-500s and three de Havilland DHC 6-300s.

The database also shows that Avation has six ATR 72-600s in service with Virgin Australia Regional Airlines, and a further 10 on order with 10 options.
