Airbus has committed to a winglet retrofit programme on the entire legacy in-service fleet of A320-family aircraft.
The airframer said the programme will be offered from 2013. It has yet to decide whether to deliver it itself or via a joint venture.
John Leahy, chief operating officer for customers, said that the winglets will offer a 3.5% range improvement on the aircraft.
Cost will be in line with the $915,000 it charges for forward-fit sharklets, said Leahy.
US airline JetBlue is likely to be launch customer for the programme.
