Qatar Airways has placed a firm order for two Boeing 777-300ERs, taking options for an additional seven aircraft of the type.
The two firm jets will be delivered in the early part of 2014, Qatar's chief executive Akbar Al Baker said at the Paris air show, adding that having the others on option gives the carrier flexibility on delivery dates. The deal is valued at $2.8 billion at list price.
"We have already shown a desire to open to new destinations in the US and the 777s will further feature in our expansion plans in this part of the world, in addition to increasing frequency to other destinations," says Al Baker.
Al Baker adds that Qatar has made it clear it is interested in the 777X, and that it will "make a decision soon".
Qatar operates a fleet of 35 777s - 22 -300ERs, nine -200LRs and four freighters.
