Passenger traffic at Indian airports up 16% in June

Total passenger traffic at Indian airports increased by 15.9% to 13.7 million in June 2011 from a year before.

Domestic throughput increased by 19% to 10.4 million and international traffic rose by 6.8% to 3.23 million, said Airports Authority of India, the state-owned agency that oversees the airports.

Total aircraft movements rose by 11.7% to 125,000, with domestic movements up by 14% to 101,000 and international movements up 2.6% to 24,900. Total freight decreased by 1.4% to 188,000t, with domestic freight down by 8.2% to 63,000t and international freight up by 2.4% to 125,000t.

Passenger numbers at New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International airport rose by 23.3% to 3.1 million, throughput at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji International airport was up by 6% at 2.5 million, traffic at Bengaluru International airport was 11% higher at 1.1 million and Chennai International airport traffic grew by 11.3% to 1.1 million.
