Perth airport expansion plan wins approval

Perth airport has gained the approval of the Federal Ministry of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government for the expansion of Terminal 1.

Perth airport's chief executive, Brad Geatches, said: "Works will commence in early 2012 and by 2014 we will have both domestic and international services operating from what is currently the International Terminal."

The company said the first phase of the expansion will involve an investment of around A$500 million ($503 million) The project will include an expanded check-in area, a passport and quarantine area for international passengers and a larger baggage reclaim area.

The expanded terminal will include an upgraded and expanded aircraft apron, 12 new aerobridge gates catering for wide-bodied domestic aircraft and new aerobridges capable of accommodating Airbus A380 aircraft, said the airport operator.
