Afghanistan start-up carrier Safi Airways launched operations on 17 November, operating an ex-Air China Boeing 767-200ER on a thrice-weekly service between Kabul and Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates.

The airline plans to launch four services a week to Dubai imminently, and aims to acquire another 767 soon to enable it to begin flights to Europe, serving either Paris or Frankfurt.

Safi is one of three private airlines being set up in Afghanistan to compete with national carrier Ariana Afghan Airlines and existing private airline Kam Air.

The other new carriers that have received approval to start operations are Afghan Airlines and Access Air.
